PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST
HON. CHIEF SIR PETER IPATAS
Governor Enga Province and Party Founding Leader

Sir Peter Ipatas is one of Papua New Guinea's most respected and experienced political leaders, having dedicated more than four decades of his life to public service and community development.
His leadership journey began at the grassroots level when he was elected as a councillor in Wabag Local Level Government at just 21 years of age. He served his community for 18 years before being elected Governor of Enga Province in 1992. Since then, Sir Peter has become one of the country's longest-serving elected leaders and a prominent advocate for education, healthcare, infrastructure development and good governance.
Before entering politics, Sir Peter worked for a short time as a teacher and education administrator, experiences that shaped his belief that investing in people is the foundation of lasting development. Throughout his career, he has championed educational opportunities for young Papua New Guineans and supported initiatives aimed at improving access to quality education across Enga Province.
Under his leadership, Enga has seen significant investment in roads, schools, health facilities and community infrastructure. Most recently, he played a leading role in the delivery of the new Enga Provincial Hospital, a landmark healthcare facility that will serve generations of Engans and stands among the most significant public health investments in Papua New Guinea since Independence.
Sir Peter was also a key figure in negotiations surrounding the reopening of the Porgera Gold Mine, helping secure a landmark agreement that increased Papua New Guinea's participation in the project and established a new benchmark for future resource development agreements.
As Founding Parliamentary Leader of the People's Party, Sir Peter continues to champion policies that promote integrity, accountability and people-centred development. His vision for Papua New Guinea is built on the principle of "Putting People First" and ensuring that every citizen has access to opportunities that improve their quality of life.
In addition to his responsibilities as Governor and Founding Leader of the People's Party, Sir Peter currently serves as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Laws, Acts and Subordinate Legislation. In this role, he continues to contribute to the strengthening of Papua New Guinea's democratic institutions and legal framework, drawing on decades of experience in public leadership and governance.
Today, Sir Peter remains committed to building a stronger, more prosperous nation through responsible leadership, sustainable development and service to the people of Papua New Guinea.
